Realistic Tool–tissue Interaction Models for Surgical Simulation and Planning

چکیده
Surgical simulators present a safe and potentially effective method for surgical training, and can also be used in preand intra-operative surgical planning. Realistic modeling of medical interventions involving tool-tissue interactions has been considered to be a key requirement in the development of high-fidelity simulators and planners. The soft-tissue constitutive laws, organ geometry and boundary conditions imposed by the connective tissues surrounding the organ, and the shape of the surgical tool interacting with the organ are some of the factors that govern the accuracy of medical intervention planning. This thesis is divided into three parts. First, we compare the accuracy of linear and nonlinear constitutive laws for tissue. An important consequence of nonlinear models is the Poynting effect, in which shearing of tissue results in normal force; this effect is not seen in a linear elastic model. The magnitude of the normal force for myocardial tissue is shown to be larger than the human contact force discrimination threshold. Further, in order to investigate and quantify the role of the Poynting effect on material discrimination, we perform a multidimensional scaling study. Second, we consider the effects of organ geometry and boundary constraints in needle path planning. Using medical images and ii

Objective: Biomechanical simulation requires accurate representation of the geometry of the structures to be studied. Specifically, when simulating the interaction of implanted prosthetics with surrounding tissues, the geometric and mechanical properties of the prosthesis and the surrounding tissues need to be adequately represented. The present work describes methods for inserting test prosthe...
متن کاملModel-based surgical planning and simulation of cranial base surgery.
Plastic skull models of seven individual patients were fabricated by stereolithography from three-dimensional data based on computed tomography bone images. Skull models were utilized for neurosurgical planning and simulation in the seven patients with cranial base lesions that were difficult to remove. Surgical approaches and areas of craniotomy were evaluated using the fabricated skull models...

Most of today's medical simulation systems are based on geometric representations of anatomical structures that take no account of their physical nature. Representing physical phenomena and, more speci cally the realistic modeling of soft tissue will not only improve current medical simulation systems but will considerably enlarge the set of applications and the credibility of medical simulatio...
متن کاملA Novel Toolbox for Generating Realistic Biological Cell Geometries for Electromagnetic Microdosimetry
Researchers in bioelectromagnetics often require realistic tissue, cellular and sub-cellular geometry models for their simulations. However, biological shapes are often extremely irregular, while conventional geometrical modeling tools on the market cannot meet the demand for fast and efficient construction of irregular geometries. We have designed a free, user-friendly tool in MATLAB that comb...
